Feels Like I’m Just Losing When It Comes To Cars

Financing used cars is the only way to go right now. But when any mechanical issues appear, the monthly payment skyrockets. Add Colorado insurance prices—and the raison d’etre—and driving a car at all becomes obscenely expensive.

I’m just coming off a false alarm “you need a new engine” on one vehicle, and a totaled-out second vehicle. This wreck was fortunate in a way because it was a high-mileage rust bucket. We got more from the kid’s insurance than we ever would have even as a trade. Yet, the plan was to keep it until the step-son needed wheels, at which point he gets the old car and, well you know the story. Now who knows when he’ll start driving.

Now this newer (still a 2017) used car seems to have a leak. Maybe it’s a fluke. I’ll find out soon enough. But it puts me in a foul mood.

I just want to read, you know? The toddlers are in bed. I just want some reading time.

Too tired for Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time.” Not even in the mood for an early X-Men comic. There’s always a Jack London freezing Alaska tale, but not tonight.

Anyhow, I have my stupid rule about reading at least a chapter from the Bible before anything else. Hmm. I’m in Two Chronicles (ha). It’s actually not terrible because of its summarizing. It is kinda nice to breeze through the history so quickly, from such a high-level, AND know that it’s still the Word of God.

I feel better already. Probably gonna hit the next chapter on that and then see about Hawking.

Oh well. Going snowshoeing with the toddlers tomorrow.

One day at a time.

Even buying a brand new car doesn’t guarantee no major issues.

    Try this on for size:

You know you are moving to another country for a few years; so, you choose to buy a brand new car so there will be a guarantee that there will be no mechanical issues while living abroad.

On top of it being a brand new car, for good measure, it comes with a 5 year/60,000 mile warranty (also valid abroad).

You ship vehicle abroad. Proceed with oil changes, oil filter changes, and air filter changes even more often than recommended, for good measure.

At 38,000, vehicle engine completely craps out and you end up in a legal battle in foreign country because the dealership in foreign country refuses to honor the warranty. (Despite the fact that the problem is 100% NOT YOUR FAULT)

You are probably already familiar with these verses. I share them only because I have found them particularly comforting during our current struggle:

    Psalms 55:22
    Psalms 62:1-2
    Jeremiah 17: 7-8
    Matthew 6:25-27, 34
    John 16:33
    2 Cor. 4:8-9
    Phil. 4:6-7

In the grand scheme of things, what my husband and I are dealing with is really nothing. We just keep putting our trust in God and pray for peace and wisdom. He sees the whole picture, while we can only see a small fraction of the whole. We have lived long enough to have seen Him work wonders through our trials; even though in the thick of them, we were questioning, doubting, stressing, and worrying.

I sincerely wish you His peace during this time of struggle!

Thanks for sharing these. At seminary I spent a lot of time memorizing (wasn’t able to actually memorize it word-for-word) the sermon on the mount, so I knew Matt 6 reference at first blush. I had to review the rest. Jeremiah is clearly derived from Psalm 1, but does have a slightly different angle. Psalm 55:22 made me feel “well, good for the righteous, but…”

On the whole, just as a nugget, since seminary, I try to forget about chapter/verse designations when working with scripture. Memorizing random designations fills up my brain’s iceberg with too many unnecessary penguins and knocks off the content penguins that I would prefer to keep.

Re: the car issue. It hasn’t leaked again. Not sure what the matter was/is. Cardboard is still wet as proof I didn’t hallucinate it. But we seem to be in the clear. As for me, I have been in worse straits. And yet here I am. As you mentioned, that is as spiritually convincing as scripture’s reassurances.

      Thanks again for sending.
